Wandering Jew legend. 19th-century artwork depicting a scene from The Legend of the Wandering Jew, as depicted by French artist Gustave Dore (1832-1883). The original legend concerns a Jew said to have taunted Christ at the time of the crucifixion. As punishment, he was fated to walk the Earth until the Second Coming. Dore produced a series of 12 wood engravings on the theme in 1856, with this engraving from an edition published in London in 1866. This is the 4th of those 12, depicting the Wandering Jew (bearded figure) outside a public house with a ghostly angelic figure in the sky with a sword.
