Roman domus. Cutaway artwork of a typical upper class Roman house, known as a domus. This sort of house would be inhabited by the wealthy, and would be the city counterpart to a villa in the countryside. Rooms included the vestibulum (entrance hall), leading to a central courtyard (atrium, left), with an enclosed garden (peristylum, right). Leading off these internal courtyards were covered rooms such as bedrooms (cubicula), a living room or study (tablinum), a kitchen (culina), and a dining room (triclinium). This domus includes an upper storey reached by stairs. On the outer wall (lower left) are examples of graffiti. This is the Trebio Valente house at Pompeii.
