Martin Pickford (born 1943, left) and Brigitte Senut (born 1954, right) displaying their discovery of a fossil skull of Ugandapithecus major, an extinct hominid primate from the Miocene epoch. This specimen was found in July 2011 at the Napak XV site on the slope of the Napak volcano in Uganda. It dates from around 19 to 20 million years ago. Prior to 2000, U. major was known as Proconsul major. Its exact relationship with other primates and human ancestors is not certain. Kenyan-born Pickford works at the College de France, Senut at the French National Museum of Natural History. Photographed on 19 September 2011, in Paris, France.
