Molecular model of the hepatitis C (HCV) drug simeprevir. This antiviral drug, marketed as Olysio, is used to treat chronic hepatitis C infections. Simeprevir is a NS3-NS4A serine protease inhibitor. It prevents the virus from producing proteins that are essential for replication. The hepatitis C virus infects liver cells causing an inflammatory disease that can lead to degeneration and scarring (cirrhosis). Simeprevir is used in combination with the drugs peginterferon-alfa and ribavirin.
