Sperm whale bacteria analysis. Petri dish culture of Clostridium septicum bacteria extracted from a dead sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). Clostridium septicum infection causes sepsis and gas gangrene which is the likely cause of death of the whale. The sample came from a dead male sperm whale that was found on Henne Strand, Jutland, Denmark. The specimen measured 14 meters in length and weighed an estimated 30 tonnes. Photographed at the National Veterinary Institute in Copenhagen.
