Launch of Gemini 4. The Titan II launcher leaves plumes of smoke behind as it carries Gemini 4 aloft on 3 June 1965. Astronauts James McDivitt and Edward White were the crew. The flight lasted 4 days, the first long-duration US mission. During the flight, White made the first US spacewalk (21 minutes), three months after Leonov's first-ever spacewalk. A computer failure required a manual retro-rocket firing, but a 1-second delay in this resulted in the craft over-shooting its landing point by 65 km. McDivitt made one more space flight, in Apollo 9 of 1969. White was tragically killed in a launchpad fire during preparations for Apollo 3 on 27 January 1967.
