William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877), English physicist and pioneer of the negative-positive process of photography. In 1839, the same year as the invention of the daguerreotype by Daguerre, he announced his invention of photography or ???hotogenic drawing?? a system of making photographic prints on silver chloride paper. In 1841 he patented the calotype - the first process of photographic negatives from which prints could be made. He was consequently awarded the Royal Society's Rumford Medal. His Pencil of Nature (1844) was the first book to be illustrated with photographs. He also published works on astronomy and mathematics.
