Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli). This seal inhabits coastal sea ice and waters around Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands. A carnivorous mammal, it eats squid, octopus,fish, krill and other small crustaceans which it swallows underwater without chewing. A primarily nocturnal creature, Weddell seals communicate using a variety of calls. Photographed in summer in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica.
