Ivory trade in Africa, historical image. Ivory from elephants and other animals has been traded for hundreds of years. An international ban on trade in ivory was passed in 1990. This photograph dates from the period around 1880 to 1923. It forms part of the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, which consists of photographs on cultural anthropology and world travel and geography.
