Experiment to show the starch content of a leaf. A fresh leaf (at left) is boiled in water for 30 seconds then in boiling ethanol for a few minutes. This removes most of the colour (centre). Iodine solution is added from a pipette. Those parts of the leaf containing starch turn blue-black (starch iodide, right).
