Europe, 1595 Mercator atlas. 16th-century Dutch map of Europe with inscriptions and labels in Latin. The Arctic regions, not yet fully explored, are poorly mapped. Historic regions shown here include the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Swedish kingdom (including what is now Finland), and Bohemia (surrounded by German and Austrian lands). The inscription at bottom right says the map is by Rumold Mercator, based on earlier maps by his father, Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594). This copy of the map is from 'Atlas Sive Cosmographicae Meditationes de Fabrica Mundi et Fabricati Figura' (Duisburg, 1595).
