Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) pups. This seal inhabits coastal regions around southern and south-western Africa, where it forms large colonies. A newborn pup weighs between 4.5 and 7 kilograms and is 60 to 70 centimetres long. It is dependent on its mother's milk for the first six months. After this it can swim and catch its own food. The black pelt is replaced by a grey one within three to five months of birth. The adults feed primarily on fish and shellfish. Photographed on the coast of Namibia.
