Olympus Mons. Computer artwork of Olympus Mons, a massive shield volcano on Mars. This is the largest known volcano in the solar system, standing over 26 kilometres tall and having a width of some 600 kilometres. The summit has six nested calderas (craters) which form an irregular depression 80 kilometres wide. Steep cliffs surround the volcano, rising a sheer 8 kilometres from the surrounding terrain.
