Spiral galaxy NGC 6744. Ultraviolet (UV) space telescope image of galaxy NGC 6744. This large spiral galaxy, lies around 30 million light years from Earth, in the constellation Pavo. It is one of the galaxies that are most similar to the Milky Way in the local Universe. It is bigger than the Milky Way, with a disc stretching 175,000 light years across. Its small companion galaxy, NGC 6744A, can be seen as a small blob (upper right) in the galaxy's outer arm. Imaged by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX).
