Gold, micro-CT scan. Sample of gold embedded within rock from Hope's Nose, Torquay, UK. This image was scanned using X-ray microtomography (known as micro-CT) which uses X-rays to scan cross-sections of a sample. The images are converted by software into a 3D virtual object that can be viewed from all angles and digitally dissected. Micro-CT is used to scan small specimens that have a low material density.
