Jamaicans who sailed to Britain, the 'Land of Hope' are temporarily accomodated in deep air raid shelter. 22/6/48. Some 240 of the Jamaicans who sailed to England to seek work are now settling in ' Clapham Deep'. Originally constructed as a deep air raid shelter it is now a haven of rest for arrivals in this country. After returning to their home land after the war the Jamacians found so much unemployment there that they have come to England, where every effort is being made to find them suitable jobs. Meanwhile they are being fed in huge marquees on Clapham Comon and resting in the 'Clapham Deep' reception centre.
