Donkey - Early each morning in Penclawdd in South Wales, the ladies of the village go out on the Loughor Estuary and carry on a job that has been done for centuries - gathering cockles. This is Mrs. Lizzie Davies, who has been combing the Llanrhidian Sands for forty years and she is out at least twice every week at low tide. Here she is with her donkey, her sieve and two loaded sacks - she'll be lucky if she gets 25/- (25 shillings, or ? 5s., or ?.25) for her catch, and she has still to boil the shellfish and take them out of their shells. It is a precarious living but it has been handed down from genertion to genertion and has usually been operated by the womenfolk. 7th January 1955. 固opFoto
