First prize in a radio quiz "Queen for a Day", held in conjunction with the US slaying of the J Arthur Bank film success "great expectations", had brought 35-year-old Mrs Kathleen Hughes from her home in a tent at Inglewood, Los Angeles, to the luxury of London's best hotels, 6000 miles away. Mrs Hughes won the prize for days visit to London to have broadcast telling how she had been turned out of her house and how her neighbour had put the tent up in his garden for her, her husband and their 3 children, and was building a house for them. First item on the agenda when she was Queen Friday would be tp repay the kindness of her neighbour. Mrs Hughes means to make the most of her 4 days here. Today she included a visit to Pinewood film studios where she saw Jean Simmons and Valerie Hobson, stars of "great expectations" in her programme of sight seeing. 10 May 1947
