Plans of the Glasgow housing committee to deal with post-war housing demands might well not set the standard for other authorities throughout England and Wales as well as Scotland. The cities programme aims for the present at the erection of at least 50,000 houses in the first 10 years after the war, an ambitious programme which even so will fall short of what is required to meet the needs of slum clearance, overcrowding, and the demand of newlyweds. On the Penilee estate 1600 brick houses have been built during the present war, and another scheme is the erection of prefabricated foam-slag four-family blockes at the rate of 2000 per year. The pre-fabricated slabs measuring 10' times 8'7" are made from slag obtained at local steelworks and way another 30 owts each. The factory has been designed to turn out the slabs at a rate which, when in full operation will enable the construction of 4000 houses a year. Local steelworks, in addition, are offering the choice of the types of steel houses, both of which are claimed to be superior to the governments portal, and both intended to be permanent.
