Hairy caterpillars. Group of baby caterpillars feeding on a leaf. Caterpillars are the larva of moths and butterflies (order Lepidoptera). Many have long hairs (setae) covering their bodies that act as a defence mechanism. The hairs often have detachable tips that will irritate would-be predators by lodging in the skin or mucous membranes.
