Brolgas (Grus rubicunda), Australia's native cranes, in flight. Brolgas occur in northern and eastern Australia and New Guinea. They are Australia's largest flying bird, growing to over 1.3 meters in height, with a wingspan of over 2 meters. They inhabit floodplains, swamps, grasslands and pastures. During the tropical dry season, they gather in large numbers in swamps and marshlands. During the day these congregations disperse to feed, returning to roost in the evening. This photograph depicts a small flight of the cranes returning to their nightly roost at sunset. Bromfield Swamp, North Queensland, Australia.
