Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) adult drinking. The Bongo is very shy and mostly nocturnal. It is the largest, the heaviest, and considered the most beautiful forest antelope. They are very timid and easily frightened. They have a very long, prehensile tongue to aid browsing on trees and dense undergrowth. Their coat is a bright chestnut with 10 to 15 white or yellowish stripes. Both males and females have spiraled lyre-shaped horns, although the males' are bigger. While generally solitary, they will form small groups or pairs. They are the only forest antelope to form herds. They dwell in dense undergrowth and rain forests. They range from the lowland rainforest of West Africa and the Congo Basin to the Central African Republic, including Kenya, Zaire and the Southern Sudan. Habitat loss is due to human activity and hunting. Jacksonville Zoo, Florida.
