Solar halos are caused by the refraction of sunlight by high altitude ice clouds. These clouds refract the light at a 22 degree angle, creating a ring 44 degrees in diameter. The spots, or "sun dogs" at either side, are the result of the hexagonal nature of the ice crystals.
