A channelized Aa lava flow on Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Channels in Aa flows develop behind the tall advancing toes and help to push the sluggish lava forward. Note the smooth pahoehoe surrounding the channel. Also note the vegetation near the lava flow. Seeds from this island of life (called a kipuka) will help the cooling land return to life.
