Lapis lazuli (lapis) is a rock containing a mixture of minerals, several of which (especially lazurite) are a rich blue color. The material has been highly valued and used for ornamental purposes for more than 7,000 years, and was greatly prized in ancient cultures. The finest material comes from Afghanistan, but lower grades (larger stones on right and left in photo) come from Afghanistan and also from Chile (center stone).
