Water has eroded a pothole or pool in the bedrock grate on top of Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. As the water erodes different pockets of rock with different solubilities, potholes are formed. These potholes are important sources of water for animals that live on the mountain. Stone Mountain is an example of the exposed granite that makes up the Appalachian mountain range.
