As fluid pahoehoe lava emerges and erupts at around, 600*F to 200*F the this top skin cools quickly. The cooled thin layer remains flexible like plastic food wrap and as the hot flowing lava pulls forward the cooled skin stretches and moves. The temperature of the lava, exact composition and flow speed all contribute to how the cooled lava formation will look.
