Borobudur on Java, Indonesia. The stupa is a stepped pyramid, 113 m x 113 m on the base and 35 m high; with 5 square terraces and 3 circular ones. A 2,5 km long frieze of sculpted images with more than 400 Buddha statues recounts the life of the Bodhisattvas and of the Buddha. A fine example of sacred architecture - a temple mountain in the shape of a Mandala. Built about 800 AD. Abandoned soon after completion due to a shift of political power. Preserved under layers of volcanic ash until its rediscovery 1815. A World Heritage site.
