The holy city of Kairouan, located in Tunisia is the fourth holy city in Islam (Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem are the others). The city wall was built from 1701-12; construction on the Sidi Oqba mosque began in 672AD. Seven pilgrimages to Kairouan dispense a Muslim of the one prescribed pilgrimage to Mecca, though afterwards, he is not allowed to call himself a Hadj.
