At the end of an ancient lava flow just south of Lahaina, Maui, this group of petroglyphs is typical of Hawaiian rock art. The figures frequently are muscular with triangular bodies and non-human heads, such as the canoe sail shown here. Anthropologists and other interested persons have painted a few of the figures to make them more visible, a practice that sometimes leads to errors of interpretation, but the work on these figures appears to be careful and accurate.
