Bituminous Coal Cleaning Plant in Central Pennsylvania. Coal from surface and underground mines in Pennsylvania and throughout the Appalachian Mountains is crushed and washed at cleaning plants to remove ash (other minerals) and sulfur. Cleaning and crushing improves combustion and lessens pollution from burning coal in power plants.
