St. Stephen's Gate, Jerusalem, photographed in the 1880s, by Felix Bonfils (1831-1885). The gate is located in the eastern wall around the old city of Jerusalem. It is known as Lions' Gate because of the carved animals decorating the facade. These creatures are actually panthers, the symbols of Baibars (1223 -1277), who was the first Mamluk Sultan of Egypt and Syria. The Christian matyr Saint Stephen was stoned to death in the mid 4th century AD, supposedly outside this gate.
