Fort McHenry is what is known as a 'star fort.' Built for the Revolutionary War, it went unused as the British did not attack Baltimore Harbor. It is best known for its role in the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer who was aboard a British vessel negotiating a prisoner's release during the bombardment, wrote 'The Star Spangled Banner', which became the US National Anthem.
