Color enhanced scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of Salmonella typhimurium. Salmonella infections worldwide are associated with turning meat and eggs. While eating spoiled food, a huge quantity of the pathogen can be consumed. Once ingested, it can trigger the small intestine infection, gastroenteritis. Diarrhea and sickness, with a fever, are common symptoms. It is treated with electrolytes. On rare occasions, the infection can be fatal. Until the end of the 1980's, S. typhimurium was the most common pathogen of Salmonella infections, but, since 1990, there has been a notable increase in the pathogen S. enteritidis.
