The Clammy Ground Cherry (Physalis heterophylla) is widely distributed throughout the fields and open woodlands of North America. The berry that grows within a larger papery shell is poisonous before ripening. However, once a ripe, yellow color, the berry can be eaten and tastes similar to a tomato. Ground Cherries were widely used as a food source by Native Americans. The roots were used in wound dressings and to make tea for headaches and stomach ailments.
