The Clammy Ground Cherry (Physalis heterophylla) is widely distributed throughout the fields and open woodlands of North America. The berry that grows within a larger papery shell is poisonous before ripening. However, once a ripe, yellow color, the berry can be eaten and tastes similar to a tomato. Ground Cherries were widely used as a food source by Native Americans. The roots were used in wound dressings and to make tea for headaches and stomach ailments. This plant was photographed at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in New York.
