Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is a native forrest plant occurring in high, open woods and hillsides from western New England to Minnesota and western Ontario, and south to Georgia and Missouri. It's roots were used by Native Americans for treating local inflammations, dyspepsia, whooping cough, diarrhea, liver disease, fever, sour stomach, flatulence, pneumonia, loss of appetite, and general debility. Today Goldenseal is one of the most popular herbs being sold in the United states being accepted by many as an herbal antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. This plant was photographed on the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in New York State.
