The Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) is a carnivorous plant species that gets nitrogen compounds & proteins, which are absent from the poor soils they grow in, by trapping and digesting insects. The pitcher is an elaborate extension of the midrib of the leaf containing a sugary digestive liquid. The scent of nectar and the plant's bright colors (often red) attract insects which fall into the pitcher & drown. The inside of the pitcher is lined with downward pointing hairs which help to keep the insects from escaping. These plants were photographed in Chequamegon National Forest of Taylor County, Wisconsin.
