Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria multicarinata), with Western Black-legged Ticks (Ixodes pacificus), carrier of Lyme disease in California. Researchers at UC Berkeley have found that fence lizards' blood contains a substance that kills the Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, when a lizard is bitten by a tick. This may explain the relatively low incidence of Lyme disease in California.
