Fires in Florida. Satellite image of large fires burning in Florida on May 19, 2001. The red pixels show the locations of some of the larger fires and their resulting smoke plumes. The largest fire is in The Big Cypress National Preserve, 75 miles west of fires in Miami. Officials estimate that 2,648 wildfires scorched nearly 194,000 acres in Florida between January and May of 2001. Draught conditions led to this rash of fires. This image comes from NASA's MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite. Terra is part of the EOS (Earth-Observing Satellite) program.
