Engraving of the Liverpool and Birkenhead Ferry-Steamer, 'Cheshire', 31st October 1863. This paddle-steamer ferry was built for the Woodside Ferry Commissioners to a design that allowed up to 2000 passengers per journey. Unusually, the 'Cheshire' was launched with her boilers already fired up and set off on a trial-trip down the Mersey straight away.
