H. L .Oakley (1882-1960), renowned silhouette artist, seen here at work cutting the silhouette of a female customer, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke (formerly Lady Irene Denison) who poses for him with a bouquet of flowers at a studio in Richmond, London. Examples of his work are on display on the right. Oakley divided his time between commercial work and setting up booths in department stores and seaside resorts where he would cut hundreds of portraits each year.
