'The Unfortunate Death of Major Andre', 1780, (1790?). British soldier Major John Andre (1751-1780) was hanged as a spy during the American War of Independence. The inscription below reads: '(Adjutant General to the English Army) at Head Quarters in New York, Oct 2. 1780, who was found within the American Lines in the character of a Spy'.
