Ireland; Dublin: marble bust of Jonathan Swift by Louis Francois Roubiliac in Long Room; Old Library of Trinity College; University of Dublin. 65 m long Long Room is the central chamber of the Old Library. here; more than 200 000 old historic books are preserved. Long Room is one of the most impressive libraries; worldwide. It was built 1712 - 1732 with an open gallery. Around 1850s all existing book shelves were full. Reason: In 1801; the Library had been given the right to claim a free copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland. In 1860 the roof was raised to allow construction of the present barrel-vaulted ceiling and upper gallery bookcases. Marble busts line the Long Room. This collection started in 1743 with 14 busts from sculptor Peter Scheemakers. Most impressive bust ist the one of Jonathan Swift by Louis Francois Roubiliac. Old Library is as well famous for the Book of Kells.
