Until January 2017; it was the ancestral seat of the Browne family; whose head was the Marquess of Sligo. The title and the house were separated 2014. Marquess of Sligo is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1800 for John Browne; 3rd Earl of Altamont. On the sight of Westport House; there was most probably a former castle of the O`Malley clan. Since 1806; the Browne family had a permanent seat in the House of Lords.
