TIRS and OLI sensors on Landsat 8 satellite, illustration. Landsat 8 (originally known as the Landsat Data Continuity Mission, LDCM) is the eighth satellite in the long-running Landsat program. It was launched in 2013. Its two sensors are the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS). The first Landsat satellite launched in 1972, with Landsat 7 launched in 1999. Landsat 9 is due for launch in December 2020.
