The flames are produced by the combustion of the paraffin. The energy released during the reaction makes the gases incandescent, but these gases remain transparent. The intensity of the flames is greatly superior to that of the background, so it becomes imperceptible as seen through the flames. However, the light, coming from an external source sufficiently intense to produce shade, is almost unaltered by its passage through the flames.
