The waxing gibbous moon photographed in very high resolution. The image was assembled and merged from many individual photographs taken through a large telescope of an astronomical observatory near Bulach, Switzerland. Craters are particularly prominent along the margin of the shadow where there is sunrise on the moon. Craters as well as roundish dark plains, so-called maria, were originally formed by impacts of asteroids on the moon.
