IBM quantum system configuration maps. The first two configurations are for systems are named Johannesburg, Poughkeepsie, Almaden, Boeblingen, and Singapore, representing 20-qubit systems. The 5-qubit systems Ourense, Valencia, and Vigo, feature a T-shaped layout (upper right). Melbourne (lower left) is a directed ladder-type geometry and Yorktown (lower right) features bow-tie connectivity. These configurations are for the IBM Q Network. Quantum computers are based on quantum mechanics and the principle of representing information using quantum properties, storing and manipulating data in units known as qubits, the basic unit of quantum information. This has the potential to massively increase computing power. Image published in September 2019.
