Satellite image of smoke rising from wildfires in Siberia, Russia, June 2020. The wildfires were exacerbated by a heatwave that saw the highest temperature ever recorded inside the Arctic Circle, 38 degrees Celsius, on the 20th June. The fires are burning on top of permafrost and in peat rich areas, releasing great quantities of carbon into the atmosphere. Data obtained by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite on 23rd June 2020.
