Almandine is a species of the garnet group, a silicate of the metals iron and aluminium (Fe3Al2Si3O12). Its crystal system is isometric, the crystal habit often being well-developed rhombic dodecahedral shapes, coloured a characteristic brownish-red. It is found in schists and other metamorphic rocks, most often as individual crystals but also as crystal groups. The crystals here seen are embedded in a micaceous host-rock from the Zillertal in Austria. Actual width of sample is 120 mm.
